Knell spelled out some of the details in a meeting with NPR employees on Wednesday. But he stopped short of suggesting that NPR would have to chop its staff or its lineup of news and entertainment programs. "That's the last thing I want to do," he said in an interview. Like many news organizations, NPR is facing higher expenses this year as it covers the Olympics in London and the presidential election at home, among other major national and international stories.
A. A repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate societal norms or rules are violated, as manifested by the presence of at least three of the following 15 criteria in the past 12 months from any of the categories below, with at least one criterion present in the past 6 months:
"This fascinating German documentary explores the bizarre life story of Ted Kaczynski, using it as a prism for the often unexamined history of the Internet. Director Lutz Dammbeck takes an unorthodox approach to the material, speculating about the darker side of technological innovation, and touching on subjects as diverse as terrorism, the CIA, acid, Ken Kesey, and utopianism."
But Rank Double Standard of the day went to Netherlands Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager, who loftily opined that,"Greece has no option but to reform and to repay (its debts) and if it doesn't do that, it will be a very serious problem, not just for Greece, but for everyone."
‘The truth is that here in the Netherlands, the situation for us Greeks is not much better either. We do not have the same rights as the Dutch doctors. They have offered me a job for 2 days per week which would earn me barely enough to survive, provided that I will work the rest 3 days for free, plus I would have to be involved in their research programmes for free.’
You see, “our United Europe is about helping each other within the safety of an unbreakable bond of solidarity against the real enemy”. (Dr Josef Goebbels, 1943)
The minority coalition and three other parties have finalised their plans to cut the Dutch budget deficit to below 3%. 'We've done it,' finance minister Jan Kees de Jager told reporters after Tuesday night's talks. 'It was a team performance.' The five parties had put the needs of the country before their own, he said. The deal includes ‚ā¨12bn worth of cuts and tax increases, plus ‚ā¨1bn in extra spending. Details have not been made public, but the measures are known to include a rise in value-added tax to 21%, limits to mortgage tax relief, cuts in health service spending and a new state pension age of 66 by 2019. According to Nos television, the own risk element in health insurance will rise from ‚ā¨220 a year to ‚ā¨350. Finances The package will now be sent to the macro-economic forecasting agency CPB which will assess the impact on the government's finances. The three minor parties -- the D66 Liberals, green party GroenLinks and ChristenUnie -- stepped in to fill the breach after Geert Wilders and the PVV pulled out of the talks. Prime minister Mark Rutte on Wednesday told reporters claims that spending power would be reduced by at least 6% because of the cuts are wrong. However, he declined to go into further details about the package of measures. Labour's finance spokesman Ronald Plasterk accused the five parties of not being 'transparent' enough about their plans. In addition, not knowing the details is making impossible for other parties to draw up their election campaigns, he said.
The average household's energy bill will rise 8%, or ‚ā¨160, next year because of higher energy prices and tax increases, the AD reports on Monday. Gas prices are set to rise 7.6% next year, adding ‚ā¨75 to the average bill. The increase in value-added tax will add another ‚ā¨35, as will a rise in the tax on coal. General energy taxes are also set to rise but it is not yet clear by how much. Last month, the consumers' association warned domestic bills are likely to go up by ‚ā¨40 next year as national grid company Tennet passes the cost of connecting new power stations to the grid onto consumers, news agency ANP reported. If so, that would take the average rise in the annual energy bill to ‚ā¨200.
In the last six months there has been a wave of countrywide attacks on offices of Equitalia, the agency which handles tax collection, with the most recent on Saturday night when a branch was hit with two petrol bombs. Staff have also expressed fears over their personal safety with increasing numbers calling in sick and with one unidentified employee telling Italian TV: "I have told my son not to say where I work or tell anyone what I do for a living."
Greeks withdraw billions of euros from banks as the country's president warns of 'panic' over Euro exit that will be 'somewhere between catastrophic and Armageddon'. The news coming out of Europe just keeps getting dire as the run on Greek banks continues prompting the nation's banks to warn of a complete banking collapse as an exit from the EU appears to be inevitable. At the same time, the a report on the Telegraph warns a Greek exit will be somewhere between 'somewhere between catastrophic and Armageddon'- as European leaders warn of civil widespread civil unrest as a result of the fallout. Of course, we heard these same threats before when we were warned of a global financial Armageddon if Greece defaulted on its debt.
Such is the case in Yemen, where in the past year attacks aimed at the country's energy infrastructure - i.e. oil and gas pipelines, electricity pylons, etc. - have been increasing and occurring on a monthly and at times weekly basis. The most recent attack took place on 14 May (Monday) when suspected Islamist militants associated with al Qaeda blew the Maarib gas pipeline at 3am in Shabwa (see photo).
Recent attacks on a pipeline in Yemen have regional electricity grid managers preparing for a possible drop in supplies of liquefied natural gas in the Boston area. Natural gas is abundant in the US, but local grid manager ISO New England said some power plants in northeastern Massachusetts have access only to liquefied natural gas. The ISO says because of that, if electricity demand spikes or another local power generator unexpectedly stops operating, diminished LNG supplies from Yemen put the grid’s ability to reliably produce electricity at risk.

With that supply decreasing, other countries, including Russia and Qatar, have created helium processing plants. And there may be supplies of helium elsewhere that have not been discovered. But the Federal Helium Reserve is the only known place with the kind of rock formation that can store helium. Experts say there is still plenty of helium to supply current needs for 25 years. Manufacturers are looking for ways to recycle helium they use so that less of it escapes into the atmosphere. Still, it's possible that in a couple of decades, the price of helium could go way up. In fact, Robert Richardson, a Cornell University physicist who won a Nobel Prize in 1996 for his work with helium, has said that helium is so valuable, a single helium balloon should cost $100!
The United States congratulates the Government of Uganda on the capture of one of the senior commanders of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) by the Ugandan military.- The capture of Maj. Gen. Ceasar Acellam is a testament to the resolve of Uganda and its military forces to work with regional forces to end the threat posed by the LRA. Ugandan and other regional forces continue to pursue the LRA and keep its leadership on the run.- The United States joins regional governments and the African Union in calling on abductees and remaining members of the LRA to depart the ranks of the LRA and peacefully surrender.- Support is available to help those who defect and peacefully surrender to return to their home communities and build a new life. While the capture of Acellam is an important step forward, the LRA continues to pose a deadly threat to civilians.- The United States is committed to supporting the people and governments of the region in their collective efforts, in coordination with the African Union and United Nations, to protect civilians and end this threat.- A small number of U.S. military advisors continue to assist Uganda and other regional forces pursuing the LRA and seeking to protect local populations.- As President Obama has said, "it is part of our regional strategy to end the scourge that is the LRA, and help realize a future where no African child is stolen from their family and no girl is raped and no boy is turned into a child soldier."
After listening to yesterday's episode and discussion about whether marriage is a privilege or a right, I think you are missing the point, at least the point as I see it. You are correct that the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are mum on the subject of marriage, but the "contract" of marriage has been used for many centuries to determine the settlement and inheritance of estates, succession of titles, parental child-rearing responsibilities, and other legal "rights and privileges" under contract law.
What I seek as a married gay person (my partner and I committed in 1978 and formally married in MA in 2004) has nothing to do with concerns about social acceptance, or even the uneven treatment of the concept of gay marriage from state to state--as long as there is some state where we can be legally married.
What I seek is more practical: "equal treatment under the law." Some equal treatments under law I would like to claim include:
* Filing federal income taxes as "married" rather than "single". Because I am working and my partner is retired, my taxes are thousands of dollars higher each year than they would be if we could file jointly.
* Passing on a higher social security income benefit to my partner in the event I die before him. My income, and so my Social Security benefit, is much higher than his earnings over his career. If were were recognized as married, the lower wage earning spouse would have his/her SS benefit boosted in the event of the death of the higher earning spouse. Under DOMA, we are treated as if we were strangers, with no adjustment of SS benefit in the event of my death before his. In an ideal libertarian world, this wouldn't matter, but this is the real world. A thousand more dollars per month for my widowed partner would be as important to him to live as it would be if "he" was a "she".
* Passing on my estate to my partner with him having to pay inheritance taxes as if he were a stranger. Again, DOMA prohibits federal tax laws from recognizing the marriage exemptions in the estate tax.
* Tax exemption for the cost of paying the premium for my retired partner's health insurance (he's not old enough to qualify for Medicare). If my partner were my "wife", my premiums (and the companies matching premiums) for "her" health insurance would be tax free. But because of DOMA, the cost of "his" premium and my company's matching premium are taxable. This alone adds about $2000 in federal taxes for me to carry medical insurance on my spouse.
I don't tend to interpret these inequities as some kind of civil rights violation, and I don't give a rat's ass whether or not someone disapproves of the use of the word "marriage". I would be happy to call it a "banana"....its just a word.
What I DO take offense to is that we are being denied equal application of federal tax and social security regulations (not even laws, just regulations) because of ... what? If the state where I live permits me to enter into a contract of marriage, what is the compelling social good that justifies the federal government in singling us out to be denied standing.
Having spent more than half our lifetimes together, sitting in each other's hospital rooms through years of "sickness and health", going through unemployment and success as we were alternately "richer and poorer", and supporting each other as first our parents and now we decline into age, is it too much to ask that we at least get the same financial and legal protections and security that other married couples take for granted?
Food for thought.
"Sir" Jim Spitzer
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will vote Wednesday on a bill to extend health and other benefits to the same-sex domestic partners of gay and lesbian federal employees. S 1910, the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act, would also allow feds to claim family and medical leave to care for same-sex partners. In addition, after a gay or lesbian retiree dies, his or her surviving partner could receive federal retirement benefits. The bill would not make those benefits available to opposite-sex domestic partners. Sens. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, who are the chairman and ranking Republican on the committee, are the bill's sponsors. The bill has 21 other co-sponsors, but Collins is the only Republican who has signed on. "This legislation is about equality for the gay community, pure and simple," Lieberman said in a March news release. "We want to attract the best people to serve in the federal government, and one way to do that is by offering their families the same benefits as their heterosexual colleagues, as businesses across the country are already doing." Collins said in March that same-sex benefits are increasingly common among private-sector employers. "This change is both fair policy and good business practice," Collins said. The Obama administration supports extending more benefits to gay and lesbian federal employees' partners, but said it has been prevented from doing so by the Defense of Marriage Act. But even if S 1910 passes the Senate, it is likely to run into trouble in the Republican-controlled House, which opposes expanding federal employees' benefits.
A homeless man has been cleared by the High Court of insulting a police officer by calling him a mierenneuker - literally ant-fucker - a term used in popular speech to describe people who stick obsessively to the rules. The court said it depended on the context in which it is used whether or not the word should be considered swearing. Only if mierenneuker is used with the intention to insult or cause offence is it a swearword, the NRC quoted the High Court as saying. The case dates back to 2010 when the man, known as Sietze J, called a policeman a mierenneuker for throwing away his can of beer. Lower courts ruled J had insulted the police officer and the case went to appeal.
A bizarre Foreign Ministry report circulating in the Kremlin today states that this Friday past (11 May) Russian Envoy Vladimir Vinokurov, the Consulate General of San Francisco, was approached near his hotel room during a visit to Los Angles by an agent of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) indentifying himself as Stephen Ivens [photo top left] who warned that he and a former FBI agent named Donald Sachtleben had uncovered evidence of an impending terror attack on US soil stating that those behind the attack were "all insane." Before Ivens was able to finish his "message," this report says, the three American Diplomatic Security (DS) agents, who trail all Russian diplomats in the US, began to "surge" towards Ivens causing him to flee. According to US news sources, Special Agent Ivens, after leaving downtown Los Angeles, returned to his home in Burbank whereupon he then fled into the rugged Verdugo Mountains after which a massive manhunt for him ensued involving 100 FBI agents, 40 sheriff's department rescuers and a dozen local police officers. FBI officials stated to the local media that Ivens was "distraught" and "might be suicidal" adding that they believed he had in his possession his service weapon.- At no time, however, did anyone ever state as to why Ivens would be in such a state. According to other US news sources, Special Agent Ivens graduated from Braintree High School in Massachusetts 18 years ago and was selected by his fellow students as "shyest" in his class. He was further described by FBI colleagues as well liked, a devoted agent with no history of disciplinary action on the job, and according to FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller "Married with a one-year-old child, he has been working for the FBI for the past three years in the national security area. Prior to that, he worked as a Los Angeles police officer for eight years." Late yesterday, after the massive manhunt failed to find any trace of Ivens, his wife Thea Ivens issued an urgent public appeal stating: "Steve, if you are out there listening right now, your wife wants to let you know, 'Babe, we are in this together for better or for worse. I love you, no matter what happens.' Your child wants you to know, 'Daddy's work? Daddy home?'" Even more bizarre about this case, this report continues, is that the retired FBI agent named Donald Sachtleben mentioned by Ivens, who also knew about this impending "plot," was arrested within hours of Ivens disappearing and charged with trading child pornography. Most important to note about Sachtleben was, aside from his being an over 25-year veteran of the FBI, he was a special agent bomb technician before retiring in 2008 who specialized in counterterrorism and bombing investigations and whose most important case was the 11 September 2001 attacks on New York City. According to US news reports about Sachtleben's arrest, this most knowledgeable of FBI agents openly traded child porn using the e-mail address 'email@example.com' in an act so stupid for one of the United States most highly trained intelligence agents it defies belief.
In spanish "Verdugo" is the guy that chopped the head of the people in the inquisition. The dude in black that sat all the way on the back in church, the guy who pulled the chair on the soon to hang people, etc.
I mean, there is indeed a place called "verdugo" on cali, but it's way too "good" to not be a code.
Thank you for all the hard work you're pulling for everyone. Hope i'm not a douchebag anymore sometime soon.
Ms. Kennedy's death was confirmed in a statement from her family, who did not comment on the circumstances. Two people with knowledge of the matter said that Ms. Kennedy's body was found hanging, and one of them said that it was discovered in a barn behind the house and that she had left a note. The other person said that the authorities who responded to the scene had cut her down and tried to revive her.
to harm your health, and it may even lower your risk of dying from chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests. The relationship between coffee drinking and health has been a hot topic in recent years, but research has produced mixed results. Some studies have linked coffee consumption to better health and a lower risk of premature death, while others suggest that coffee -- or rather caffeine -- might contribute to heart disease through negative effects on blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart rate. The new study is by far the largest of its kind to date. As part of a joint project with the AARP, researchers from the National Institutes of Health followed more than 400,000 healthy men and women between the ages of 50 and 71 for up to 13 years, during which 13% of the participants died.
In this large prospective study, coffee consumption was inversely associated with total and cause-specific mortality. Whether this was a causal or associational finding cannot be determined from our data. The White House is threatening to veto the $642 billion 2013 Defense authorization bill passed last week by the House Armed Services Committee because it spends too much on national security. The administration signaled last week that it would not support a budget that is $4 billion over the president's request and $8 billion over the spending caps set last fall by the bipartisan Budget Control Act of 2011. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Rep. Buck McKeon, R-Calif., the Armed Services Committee chairman, had a terse exchange of statements last week, with Panetta claiming the extra money would actually hurt the military by making it more likely that Congress and the White House will be unable to avoid across-the-board budget cuts in January that could reduce the 2013 defense budget by $55 billion or more. McKeon, however, said the extra money was part of an effort by House Republicans to prevent reductions so deep that the military would not be able to carry out core missions. The House is set to pass the defense bill by week's end, but at some point lawmakers will have to reconcile differences with the Senate, which currently plans to abide by last fall's spending caps. That could require the Senate Armed Services Committee to find $4 billion in cuts in the Pentagon's plan when it meets the week of May 21 to write its version of the budget. This isn't the only area of dispute. The statement of administration policy issued by the White House's Office of Management and Budget expresses disappointment that lawmakers have not endorsed Pentagon plans for higher fees in Tricare health insurance and pharmacy co-pays. The administration was trying to save $13 billion across five years, but the House version of the 2013 defense authorization bill greatly reduced the scope of the Pentagon proposal, allowing only a modest $2.9 billion in savings from small increases in pharmacy co-pays.
Army leaders say a combat brigade will be assigned to the Pentagon's Africa Command next year in a pilot program that will send small teams of soldiers to countries around the continent to do training and participate in military exercises. Gen. Ray Odierno, the Army's chief of staff, says the plan is part of a new effort to provide U.S. commanders around the globe with troops on a rotational basis to meet the military needs of their regions. This pilot program sends troops to an area that has become a greater priority for the Obama administration since it includes several nations where terrorist groups are an increasing threat to the U.S. and the region. Odierno says a brigade from the 10th Mountain Division will take on the new task.

Like Reply 1 hour ago 6 Likes rjm2238 I gave up on Liberal news in general and CNN in particular years ago after conducting an experiment involving C-SPAN and Cable and the major news channels. It is an experiment anyone may conduct however it is time consuming, but worthwhile. First select an issue you find interesting and of great import to the country. Next follow the Congressional debate as much as you can on C-SPAN, watching the floor debate, not a synopsis of the debate but the actual debate. That is the imperative portion of the experiment as it disallows any coverage or coloring or interpretation of what was said, you hear only what was said. Now listen to the coverage of what you have witnessed yourself, live in Congress and see which networks present the most accurate and unbiased version of the particular debate you have been following. I had found that when watching MSNBC, CNN, NBC or to a slightly lesser degree the rest of the mainstream media, that their coverage was so tilted to the left that it was actually difficult to even grasp that they were discussing the event you had just witnessed. The words you just saw someone use, are changed, omitted or ascribed to someone else. The whole tenure of the debate is so distorted that you are left scratching your head and wondering how could they take what I just saw and change it into what I just heard them say? It is crazy. I have noticed that Fox News engages in basically none of this. I can hear the leftists now, the George Soros media monopoly fans whining and groaning but I am not going to argue with them any longer. I know. I urge you folks out there to do this experiment for yourselves, it won't take all that long, and it will change the way you obtain your information for the rest of your life and it will allow you to see how you are being flat out manipulated, and that my fellow voters is important, it is critical and it is worth the time. I got rid of my cable altogether after they proved to be just as useless. -Fake polls, outright lies, more bias and party propaganda than the other three put together, and they only report on the part of the fact they want you to hear, they omit the parts they don't want you to know. It turns out that wasn't true. The double-agent hadn't been recruited and placed by the CIA, but by British intelligence , who also managed the operation. In fact, the Americans had only recently been made aware of the joint British-Saudi effort. The leaks about the operation from the American side have infuriated British intelligence officials , who-had hoped to continue the operation. The leaks not only scuttled the mission but put the life of the asset in jeopardy . Even CIA officials, joining their MI5 and MI6 counterparts, were describing the leaks as "despicable," -attributing them to the Obama administration.
Who's your daddy? Now a website may know for sure. Companies crossing DNA-mapping technology with social networking are developing a brave new world in which samples of customers' genes can be used to map family trees, find relationships people never knew they had, and identify adopted children's biological parents. Earlier this month, Ancestry.com Inc., a genealogy-research website with about 1.9 million subscribers, rolled out a $99 DNA service that lets users compare some 700,000 points on their own genome with those of others in its database. The site, which also charges a monthly subscription fee of $12.95, uses DNA data ...
"Is this [vice presidential debate] about her brain power?... Do you think cute will beat brains?...Do you think she'd do better on the questions on Jeopardy! or the interview they do during a half-time?...My suspicion is that she has the same lack of intellectual curiosity that the President of the United States has right now and that is scary!"
The Living Planet Report is the world's leading, science-based analysis on the health of our only planet and the impact of human activity. Its key finding? Humanity's demands exceed our planet's capacity to sustain us. That is, we ask for more than what we have. The latest edition of the Living Planet Report was released in May 2012. You can read all about its findings in the links on the left, or click on the link and download the full report. In a world first, LPR 2012 was launched from space - by astronaut André Kuipers in the International Space Station, in collaboration with the European Space Agency. Barack Obama's re-election campaign for the White House is poised to launch its secret weapon: an online tool that the campaign hopes will vastly increase its ability to mobilise volunteers and potential voters across the US. The new tool, called Dashboard, is being seen as the possible Holy Grail of digital political organising, one that has eluded campaign chiefs for years. It is already being road-tested in several of the crucial swing states that Obama must hold onto if he is to remain in office. The technology has been incorporated into the campaign's website, myBarackObama.com, and is expected to be made available to thousands of staff and volunteers across the country within the next 10 days. Its URL can be found through search, though it remains inaccessible to most Obama supporters until the launch.
In what is shaping up as the first major deal made on the ground at the Cannes Film Festival, The Weinstein Company is in hot and heavy negotiations for U.S. rights to Code Name Geronimo, the John Stockwell-directed drama about the manhunt for 9/11 terror attack mastermind Osama bin Laden. The deal is in the $2 million range, and is being negotiated on the basis of a trailer for a film that is in post-production. That footage was unveiled today by Voltage Pictures' Nicolas Chartier and WME Global's Graham Taylor (who just landed in Cannes), and Weinstein moved quickly to hammer out a deal with attorney Craig Emanuel. What is most intriguing about this is that TWC can put the film into theaters in early fall, a move that would put it before the Kathryn Bigelow-directed Zero Dark Thirty. That film, which has an ensemble cast including Joel Edgerton and Jessica Chastain, won't be released until December 19 after Sony Pictures decided not to put it in theaters during the presidential elections. Already it is clear that President Obama's green light of the SEAL Team 6 mission will be a major issue in the upcoming presidential campaign, and Republicans have already railed against the notion that writer Mark Boal got inside information from the administration for his script.

From the rubble, literally, of the earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010, plans to build the first professional soccer stadium in the country are taking shape. The appropriately named Phoenix Stadium is set to rise in Cité Soleil, an area designated by the United Nations as a red zone -- an impoverished town in desperate need of economic development. The entire project, which has an estimated cost of $5 million, will have the majority of its financing provided by Delos LLC as part of the Clinton Global Initiative. Additional financing will be secured from corporations and individual donors. The stadium is only the first component of a project that will result in the construction of a youth soccer academy, an elementary and middle school, and infrastructure projects that will include agriculture, composting and water treatment.

In a clinical trial that could lead to treatments that prevent Alzheimer's, people who are genetically guaranteed to develop the disease -- but who do not yet have any symptoms -- will for the first time be given a drug intended to stop it, federal officials announced Tuesday.
The drug trial is part of the federal government’s first national plan to address Alzheimer’s, which was unveiled Tuesday by Kathleen Sebelius, the secretary for health and human services. The government took the unusual step of assigning $50 million from the current year’s N.I.H. budget to research considered too promising to wait, including the Colombia trial and a study on whether inhaled insulin can ease mild cognitive impairment, Dr. Collins said. Another $100 million is proposed for 2013, mostly for research, but also for education, caregiver support and data collection.
Success for the Colombia trial is, of course, no sure thing. Many trials fail, and Alzheimer’s research has so far found no treatment effective for more than several months. But experts say that trying drugs years before symptoms emerge could have greater potential because the brain would not yet be ravaged by the disease. The trial will be financed with $16 million from the National Institutes of Health, $15 million from private donors through the Banner Institute and about $65 million from Genentech, the drug’s American manufacturer.
A 15-year-old schoolgirl died of tuberculosis after a series of doctor errors missed the chance to detect and cure her disease, with her GP claiming she was 'lovesick', an inquest heard today. Alina Sarag died in January last year after a GP allegedly advised her that her physical deterioration was due to mental health problems.
Her distraught father, Sultan Sarag, 43, broke down as he told the court: 'The doctor said to her ‘Did you meet someone on holiday? Are you missing him?
'She found it very distressing he was suggesting she was lovesick for a boy.
'He said all the problems were in her head and she should see a psychiatrist or spiritual healer.'
Mr Sarag also claimed Dr Sharad Shripadrao Pandit accused him of 'mollycoddling' Alina, and refused to test his daughter for TB.
Health officials said Armando Rodriguez, 34, of Stockton, has active pulmonary tuberculosis, which can include coughing up blood or phlegm and can spread through the air. Rodriguez has been noncompliant with his treatment and could become contagious as a result, Ginger Wick, nursing director for San Joaquin County, said in a letter requesting a warrant for Rodriguez's arrest.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said laws to control the spread of tuberculosis have been in use for more than a century, though regulations differ in each state.
Five years ago, 720 girls received the cervical cancer vaccine at a metropolitan school in Melbourne. Within two hours of vaccination, 26 girls reported symptoms including dizziness, weakness and palpitations. Tests of the girls found no basis for their symptoms and all of the girls recovered. It was likely they had experienced a case of mass hysteria. But Dr Buttery says if people believed the girls had experienced adverse reactions to the vaccines, they could be deterred from getting the vaccines themselves and the girls affected may be reluctant to go back and get the full three doses. ''Conversion disorder tends to occur in waves of direct visualisation initially, but if it was taken up at community level thanks to social media, I think it's very reasonable to hypothesise that the social impact could be more rapid and widespread than previously,'' Dr Buttery says.
But the nationwide vaccination campaign is a powerful sign of Haitians helping themselves. The campaign has been supported by several organizations including the GAVI Alliance, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), UNICEF, and others. Yet the drive to protect people's health and save lives, particularly children's lives, is something that unites Haitians.
